The sporting world was this Affies product’s oyster when he became only the 13th schoolboy to be chosen for both the SA Schools cricket and rugby teams in 2016. His dilemma over which sport to pursue was solved by Affies old boy and global superstar AB de Villiers, who had been through a similar situation when he was the Affies and Blue Bulls U18 flyhalf, although he did not make the national schools side.
Former Titans hero De Villiers told De Swardt that something would happen that would make the right direction clear. That ‘something’ turned out to be him being named Player of the Tournament at the 2016 CocaCola Khaya Majola Cricket Week and De Swardt’s mind was made up.
A skilful seam bowler and a left-handed batsman, all-rounder De Swardt has been flourishing in the internationally-recognised high performance program at the University of Pretoria, and the determined 21-year-old last season made a superb start to his first-class career with Northerns, boasting a batting average of 73 after six matches, including a century and two fifties, while he has also taken 10 wickets. He made his List A debut for Northerns in March 2018 and has also enjoyed success in the 11 games he has played in the 50-over format.
