Piedt is just 27 years old but is surely already in the top-10 of the list of all-time wicket-takers in the CSA Three-Day Provincial Cup, such has been his level of consistency since making his debut for South-Western Districts in 2012/13.
The seam bowler made a sensational start to his first-class career as he took seven for six on debut against Western Province in Oudtshoorn, reducing them to 15 for nine before they rallied to 34 all out in their second innings. He ended his first season with 59 wickets, a South African record for a debutant.
It seems Western Province never forgave him because, despite a first-class record of 187 wickets in 55 matches at an average of just 23.85, he has never played a franchise game for the Cape Cobras, of whom they are affiliates.
Piedt’s game is all about accuracy and getting the ball to move and this bustling seamer has been compared in style to the great Vernon Philander. He is also capable with the bat, having scored four first-class half-centuries and he has a tidy record with the ball in 50 overs cricket as well.
The Oudtshoorn product was loaned by the Titans for their last two round-robin games of the Momentum One-Day Cup and impressed coach Mark Boucher enough to be given his first full franchise contract.
