As many would attest, the Multiply Titans opener has never been one who plays for accolades, but his numbers over the course of the international season warranted the praise that he received. Elgar is nominated for Standard Bank Test Player of the Year, as well as the coveted SA Cricketer of the Year award.
“Those who know me will tell you that I am the last guy who plays for personal accolades, but it is nice to see the efforts of a tough season rewarded. We all had to work really hard to get through some very tough cricket, against some really tough opposition,” Elgar enthused.
“’We worked towards a common goal, and we were successful. It is nice to see those performances now recognised after a good season.”
Elgar was often at the centre of South Africa’s key moments, facing the testing new ball upfront, in a summer where the Proteas faced quality attacks from India and Australia. It has often been remarked that opening the batting in South Africa is one of the toughest challenges in the game, and so it proved this summer.
Despite that, Elgar made his presence felt, and ended his summer on a high, with a typically dogged knock against Australia at The Wanderers. That match was also marked by a truly sensational catch by Elgar, which he maintains has to be the highlight of the summer.
In a season that saw fellow Titans players Morne Morkel and AB de Villiers complete stunning catches at Supersport Park Centurion, Elgar’s running effort at the Bullring certainly takes some beating.
“It definitely is the catch of the summer for me,” he quipped at the time.
On a more serious note, Elgar stated that the number of Titans nominated for domestic and national awards was testimony to the culture that was cultivated at Supersport Park Centurion.
“It’s wonderful to see so many teammates nominated, and I think that is just a culture that filters down from the very top. We have a fantastic CEO in Jacques Faul, an excellent management and coaching team, and then that mentality feeds all the way down the structures.
“Even the people who clean the change-rooms, for example, they have that positive and winning mentality. That feeds through to players at all the various teams, and I don’t think it is a surprise to see so many guys in the Titans set-up nominated for their outstanding seasons,” said Elgar.
The CSA Awards will be held on Saturday, 2 June, and will be broadcast live on SuperSport.
