Cricket South Africa’s national selectors today named Lungi Ngidi in their the Standard Bank Proteas 15-man squad for the first three Momentum ODIs to be played against India starting next month.
The fast bowler, who marked his Test debut with a Man of the Match performance in the 2nd Sunfoil Freedom Test at SuperSport Park last week, has been named amongst eight Multiply Titans in the ODI party.
The 21-year-old, who has taken 24 wickets across all formats for the Multiply Titans, made his white ball debut last summer, where he featured in the three match KFC T20 series against Sri Lanka.
“It’s well deserved," says Multiply Titans head coach Mark Boucher.
“If he’s made an impact for us (Titans) it’s been with the white ball. He was injured at the start of theseason and didn't have a lot of game time but because of what he did do in a short period of time coming back to red ball cricket he got picked for the national side and did fantastically well.”
“It wasn’t a surprise for me that he got picked for the ODI squad because he’s done really for us over the last two seasons.”
Tabraiz Shamsi, who has been phenomenal in the white-ball arena this season, having finished the leading wicket-taker in the Ram Slam T20 Challenge, and is currently leading the Momentum One-Day Cup charts with 26 wickets at an average of 14.84, has also named in the squad.
“He’s our been super star. His selection is well deserved. He’s picked up so many wickets in the middle of the game for us - probably been the best spinner in the country with regards to his wicket taking abilities," concluded Boucher.
South Africa and India will compete in six ODIs, with the 2nd and 6th being contested at SuperSport Park on the 4th and 16th of February respectively. Tickets are available at www.ticketpros.co.za
