NORTHERNS CRICKET UNION AWARDS NIGHT
Just a month after the Nashua Titans clinched the double, namely, the MTN Domestic Championship and Standard Bank Pro20 Series, Northerns Cricket Union hosted its own glittering Prize Giving Night and handed out awards for the 2007-2008 campaign to its best players, umpires, scorers and clubs on Friday 23 May 2008 at SuperSport Park.
24 year old Roelof van der Merwe walked away with four awards, scooping the coveted Titans Player of the Year Award, MTN Domestic Championship Player of the Year, Standard Bank Pro20 Series Player of the Year and the Newcomer of the Year. Roelof has been a true match winner for the Titans in the past season. He is a great advert for cricket and has brought a fresh look and approach to the Titans set-up. In the MTN Domestic Championship he averaged 29.88 with the bat with a highest score of 72 and was the leading wicket take in the championship, taking 27 wickets at an average of 14.25. In the Standard Bank Pro20 Series, he averaged 27.42 with the bat with a highest score of 70 and he was the third highest wicket taker in the competition behind Charl Langeveldt (Cobras) and Mbhalati (Titans) with an average of 13.92. He only played two matches in the SuperSport Series and we are looking forward to his growth in this format of the game.
