FEEDBACK FROM THE PROVINCIAL COACHING MANAGERS MEETING
HELD ON 10th and 11th March 2008
- FEEDBACK – 2008 ICC U19 WC IN MALAYSIA – RAY JENNINGS
Cricket South Africa had a 18 months programme to prepare players for the ICC U19 World Cup.
Scouts were placed at all the franchises to monitor the progress of U18 players from the affiliates.
Talent camps for the identification of potential players were held throughout the country.
The following criteria was used to select the final SA U19 team:
- All round ability in cricket (Batting. Bowling, Fielding and attitude for the game) – Four in One Cricketers
- Desire to achieve
- Mental approach to the game
- Performance of players in the Coca Cola Khaya Majola U19 week as well as the 3-Day Competition.
- Triangular tournaments with India and Bangladesh
Coach Ray emphasized that the affiliates of CSA must encourage the school coaches and players
to adhere to the values of the game (see attached code of conduct -SA Schools Cricket Board).
“Life after cricket” - We must always encourage cricketers to study after matriculation because of the
current availability of playing opportunities and contracts with 6 franchise teams. The pipeline from
schools through to franchise fails to meet the expectation of school leavers.
The focus on U19 cricket in South Africa needs to be uplifted overall in order for us to compete
against the top countries at this level:
- Media coverage
- Financial backing (CSA and Affiliate level)
- Preparation of players
- CSA APPROVAL OF PRIVATE ACADEMIES
Following our last coaching managers meeting in October 2007, CSA embarked on a pilot project to investigate the running of academies in the Gauteng Province. Ian Smith’s Academy based in Easterns as well as Daryl Cullinan’s in Gauteng were visited.

- Police clearance certificate for all coaches operating within.
- Coaches must affiliate to the local coaches association (NCUCA).
- Transformation programme (e.g. bursaries / out reach coaching programme for the previously disadvantaged).
- Adequate Facilities for the academy to operate on.
- Guidelines on how the academy operates must be made available with the application.
- Any fixtures to be played by academy players will be made outside the CSA or its affiliates provincial, schools or club schedule.
- Approval to be reviewed annually
List of approved academies will be put in the CSA and its affiliates’ website.
